ABOUT THE BOOK
These photographs offer only a glimpse into works that were essentially spatial.
Each site-specific installation invited visitors to walk through and around it in order to experience it from many angles. Some pieces were easily felt and touched, and some challenged one’s sense of balance. In a few, voices of community members could be heard speaking of their concerns about clean air and clean water.
There were pieces that focused on connecting to the physical aspects of a given place – a skylight, a window ledge, or a room’s corner. Others brought attention to the changes that urban living has brought to the land. Some pieces addressed the consequences our collective behaviors have on our air and water, which are crucial for our survival and good health. A few arose from playing with the location of a place, or with moving lights, or with hidden instabilities.
These site-specific installation were tempoary, lasting only a few months, a few days, or merely a few hours.
Now, thirty or forty years later, these two dimensional photos offer only a glimpse into what once was. Your are invited to imaginatively engage in a sense of place, to imaginatively feel what could be touched, and to imaginatively listen to what was being said.
